Abacus is being used in our curriculum for learning the basics of mental arithmetic, right and left brain development and to increase their co-ordination.

Abacus or Abaci ( plural of abacus) is a kind of calculator called "soroban" in Japanese and "swanpan" in china. Abacus originally meant a flat board made up of slate or wood.(refer Image below)

A brief history on Abacus..

Indian Abacus
First century sources, such as the Abhidharmakosa describe the knowledge and use of abacus in India. Around the 5th century, Indian clerks were already finding new ways of recording the contents of the Abacus. Hindu texts used the term shunya (zero) to indicate the empty column on the abacus.

Japanese Abacus
In Japanese, the abacus is called soroban, imported from China around 1600.The 1/4 abacus, which is suited to decimal calculation, appeared circa 1930, and became widespread as the Japanese abandoned hexadecimal weight calculation which was still common in China. The abacus is still manufactured in Japan today even with the proliferation, practicality, and affordability of pocket electronic calculators. The use of the soroban is still taught in Japanese primary schools as part of mathematics, primarily as an aid to faster mental calculation. Using visual imagery of a soroban can arrive at the answer in the same time (or faster) as obtainable with a physical instrument.

Basic reasons for using the abacus tool

The abacus education meets the needs of today's professional society.

By using the abacus method regularly, the four basic operations (+,- ,x, /) can easily be done with the mind using photographic memory. With constant practice of the abacus, especially that of also mental arithmetic, the interaction between the left and the right parts of the brain in an instant, cause stimulation that greatly benefits the brain.

Questions frequently raised in minds..
Won’t this create more burden on the child?

There is no extra burden on the child during the training, but the fact is that the brain gets developed and hence the regular studies also become easier. In fact Abacus is not an regular curriculum, but it is a brain development course. World over, students are undergoing Abacus  mental arithmetic training without any burden and get knowledge combined with fun and play.

Like other training programs, Abacus also has books and syllabus but the whole course is easy and burden less. A child will start taking interest in themselves which is the primary motive of any Abacus Brain Gymnasium.

At the start, the child is taught how to use an Abacus – a beaded instrument used for the purpose of calculation. Later on, the child is not dependent on the Abacus to do the calculations.

Few facts:
  • An ideal tool for children to identify text and numbers and handle simple Arithmetic Calculations.
  • Enriches their brain power by starting it in their early years.
  • Imparts high moral values to kids stories and colorfully illustrated texts.
  • Uses a specially seven rod multicolored abacus for early use.
  • Creates a natural liking for arithmetic in kids
  • Kindles creatives thinking and ability to use the left and right side of brain.
  • By using the abacus (or the manual calculator) as a tool, the brainpower is harnessed.
Also there is overall brain development focusing on right brain.

Human Brain
  • The Human brain has two halves: the right and the left
  • The left-brain is linear and logical. The right brain is intuitive.
  • When confronted with problems, the left-brain being logical, reasons out how intense will be the problem and allowing that to prevail on the mind, will make a person give up his goal.
  • The way the right brain interprets the goal is different. It is not logical but creative and thinks about new methods to reach the goal.
  • The right brain is able to "VISUALIZE" the final scene of goal achievement and will not rest till newer methods of reaching the goal are found.
